1. Identify keyphrases relevant to your business for which you desire top rankings. If your site is targeting wrong keyphrasess, the chances of search engine’s and customers finding you are remote, resulting in no traffic, lost revenue and low rankings.
By targeting the wrong keyphrasess, you you are wasting valuable time and energy you put into getting your site to rank for those terms to begin with. If you want to stay competitive , you can’t afford to do that. Tools like overture and word tracker are helpful for this.
2. Build your pages around those keyphrases. While writing content, avoid being too technical. People are looking for a solution to their needs. Help them by writing in a clear and concise manner. Write content as if you are speaking to your customers.
3. Inset keyphrases in strategic portions of the web pages.
a) In the title and meta tags
b) in the body text
c) anchor text of page – Anchor text is the visible part of a hyperlink. If your site is about web templates, make sure that “web templates” is included in the backlinks from other sites. Search engine’s will figure out that your site is about “web templates”. It’s much better than using “click here”. A word of caution : Vary your anchor text. Hundreds of links all with the same anchor text will look unnatural and is a red flag to search engine’s.
4. Never try to trick the search engine’s by using spam methods. These include hidden text, hidden links, duplicate content, doorway pages etc. Search engine’s are much smarter than you think !
5 . Build incoming links by submitting to web directories and exchanging links with other related sites.
6. Wait for the results to come. Remember search engine optimization involves tweaking the site – adding more pages, changing the content, constantly trying to find reciprocal link partners to exchange links with, participating in forums to increase awareness about your products and services etc.
